Job description

Our client is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Controller (or Assistant Controller) to support their growing organization by leading core accounting functions, enhancing operational efficiencies, and implementing scalable processes. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in corporate accounting, a detail-oriented mindset, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. This role will play a key part in managing the financial close process, refining expense allocation methodologies, and supporting cross-functional teams with timely and accurate financial insights.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the monthly close process, including journal entries, reconciliations, accruals, and financial reporting.
  • Review and analyze expense allocations and implement appropriate methodologies for intercompany and departmental expense management.
  • Oversee intercompany reconciliations, transaction fee tracking, and ensure the accuracy of management fee calculations.
  • Prepare and record payroll-related journal entries and ensure compliance with reporting standards.
  • Resolve consolidation and reporting issues in coordination with finance and operational teams.
  • Develop and maintain strong internal controls, accounting policies, and financial procedures.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Fund Accounting, Legal, Treasury, and Operations teams to support business objectives.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance accounting accuracy, efficiency, and automation.
  • Support audits, tax preparation, and compliance efforts as required.
  • Contribute to system implementations and upgrades, including ERP, expense management, and reporting tools.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA preferred.
  • 5+ years of relevant accounting experience, preferably in a corporate or property accounting role.
  • Must have experience with commercial or industrial real estate, ideally within a real estate investment or property management group.
  • Strong understanding of expense allocation, intercompany accounting, and multi-entity consolidations.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel (e.g., VLOOKUPs, Pivot Tables, SUMIFs) and comfortable working with large data sets.
  • Experience with systems such as Yardi (required); familiarity with NetSuite, Concur, or Kyriba is a plus.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively across departments.
  • Comfortable in a deadline-driven environment with a proactive, ownership-oriented mindset.
  • Demonstrated success in building or optimizing accounting processes and supporting growing operations.
